Preparing the Heart - the Workbook

A Digital Workbook for Muslim Women Navigating the Marriage Journey

There’s a particular kind of tiredness that comes from wanting something so badly, for so long, while everyone around you seems to have an opinion about how, when, and why you should get it.

This workbook won’t rush you toward an outcome. It will help you get honest — about your intentions, what you’re actually looking for, the grief and comparison this process can bring, and how to move forward with real confidence Insha’Allah.

Written by Sarah Taher, MSc

I’m a qualified psychologist and therapist working at the intersection of mental health and Muslim identity. This workbook is built on the same four pillars I walk women through in Preparing the Heart, my live support group — for the woman who wants real support in thinking through marriage, but isn’t in a season where a live group is the right fit.

Who This Is For

This workbook may be for you if you:

  • Are navigating the marriage search — for the first time, or returning to it after a previous chapter

  • Feel the weight of family or community expectations around your marital status

  • Want to get honest about why marriage matters to you, separate from outside pressure

  • Have felt grief, comparison, or a quiet sense that something is wrong with you during this process

  • Want practical tools — not just validation — for moving forward with clarity and confidence

  • Aren’t in a place (financially, logistically, or emotionally) to join a live group right now, but still want real support

WHAT'S INSIDE

What's inside Preparing the Heart Workbook sneak peak flatlay mockup

Four Chapters. Real Depth. Practical Tools.

Chapter One — Niyyah & Readiness Identity, values, and getting honest about why marriage matters to you. Includes the Values Sort worksheet.

Chapter Two — Kafa’ah & Mawaddah Compatibility, character, and building a realistic picture of what you’re looking for. Includes the Non-Negotiables vs. Nice-to-Haves worksheet and first-meeting questions.

Chapter Three — Tawakkul & Qadr Sitting with grief, comparison, and family pressure — and reconnecting with your worth. Includes the Letter to Myself exercise.

Chapter Four — Istikhara & Boundaries Practical tools for decision-making, boundaries, and moving forward with confidence. Includes 10 Red Flag / Green Flag scenarios and a personal Commitment Statement.

Closing — Where This Leaves You Bringing the four chapters together, plus resources for continued support.

“Your worth was never something you had to earn through marriage. It was already yours, before you opened this book, and it will still be yours regardless of what comes next.”

“None of this guarantees a particular outcome, and I’d be lying to you if I suggested it could. What it does offer is something more durable than a guarantee: a version of yourself who enters this process clear about her values, honest about her worth, and equipped to protect herself along the way.”

WHAT THIS WORKBOOK ISN'T

To set expectations honestly:

This workbook can’t fully replace the experience of a live group — there’s something about being witnessed by other women in real time that a page can’t reproduce. What it can offer is a private, unhurried space to do real reflection, at your own pace, without an audience.

It also isn’t a substitute for professional support. If what surfaces as you work through it feels heavier than reflection alone can hold, the closing chapter includes resources for reaching out to a therapist, a religious mentor, or crisis support.

Want deeper support?

If you read this and find yourself wanting more — real-time connection with other women walking the same road, guided by me directly — I also run a small, confidential live group called Preparing the Heart, held over four sessions on Zoom.
